Academic Shoot Preview Assignment

The Story
This photo really does a good job of telling us the story that all of these students gathered together to pray before school. The photographer did a really good job at capturing the moment where everyone is still and their eyes are closed while they are holding hands praying. This photo appeals to the eye because there is a lot of repetition with the people and there is balance going on since there is the same amount of people on both sides.

Action and Emotion

This picture doesn't really show any action but I feel like it has a lot of emotion. The photographer fit a really good job of getting a good angle so you can see her emotions and all of the books. You can tell that she looks happy while she is reading and this picture just looks so emotional. The photographer used rule of thirds by putting the girl on the upper third of the picture so you can see more of whats going on.

Filling the Frame

The Photographer did a good job at filling the frame and getting as close as they could to the subject. If they got any closer than you couldn't tell what was going on in the picture. The frame is filled with a lot  of interesting stuff because you can see everything thats going on and the light and smoke look really cool.

Part 2
My favorite picture was the "Melancholy" one. It is a picture of a boy poring two different chemicals into one beaker at the same time so it looks really cool. It is a very close up picture and it is taken kind of from a worms eye view.
1. I picked this picture because I really liked the colors in it and I like how it was focused on the boy. I also like how interested he looked in what he was doing.
2. Some of the composition rules in this picture are balance because the picture look almost symmetrical. It also really fills the frame because it is so close to the subject.

Pictures I could take
1. I think I could take pictures like these in science classrooms where there are experiments going on. I also think I could take some in the library where people are working.
2. I would like to visit Mr. Damman's classroom, Ms. Holloway's room, and the library.
3. I would make sure to use as many composition rules as I can to be the best photographer I can.

Unethical Photoshopping

A. On April 1st in Israel it was portrait day for the cabinet and someone ended up editing the picture that the photographer took. They went over the two women in the cabinet and digitally replaced them with men to make it an all men cabinet. On April 1, 2007 another photographer and photoshopped a picture of the Bluffton University baseball team. They were all praying about fellow team mates that they lost and the photographer edited a man in the background so that he had no legs.

B. I think this kind of photo editing is unethical because it completely changes the meaning or purpose of the picture. I think it is okay to edit a picture and emphasize certain parts to make the photo look better but I don't think its okay to change the subjects of the photo.

I think the editing they did to the photo above is very unethical because it changes the meaning of the picture. Before it was edited the soldier had his arm out like he was telling the man to stop but now he has no arm out and its just him and his gun. Now it looks like the soldier wants the man to come to him so that he can kill him.
I think the editing of this photo isn't that bad because it doesn't have a very significant change. All they did was move the pyramids a little closer together to make the picture look better. I don't think anybody would get offended by the change in this photo so therefore I don't think it is unethical.

Post Shoot Reflection

Part 1

1. I faced some challenges during this shoot because about halfway through it a bunch of people came out and it was hard to take pictures with them in my way. It was also challenging to find a lot of happy stuff outside except flowers.

2. I found myself thinking a lot about how I wanted to focus the pictures and what angle I wanted. While taking the picture that I used for metal I had to take it in several different angles and I had to make sure that it focused on the vine.

3. I'm not sure I would do much to change the pictures I took because I already knew the composition rules. I might just make sure that some of my photos were more in the rule of thirds.

4. I would keep using lines and focusing on the subjects that I wanted if I had to do this shoot again. I think most of the pictures I took were pretty good and used some of the composition rules.

5. I did have some of the composition rules that I wanted to have. I had leading lines a couple of times and rule of thirds.

6. I liked the prompts that we had to shoot because you could be really creative with them but I don't know if I would shoot them again.

Part 2

http://jackphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2014/09/metal-bowie-happy-square.html

1. I think his Happy photo is really good because it is focused on the pink flower and that is automatically what your eye is drawn too.

2. I also really liked his Metal photo is really interesting because it is so close and focused and it is really appealing to the eye.

3. I think he could have leveled out his square picture a little more and maybe have gotten a little closer.

Avoiding Mergers

This photo doesn't avoid mergers very well because it looks like the girl and the buildings are on the same plane. The picture isn't very appealing to the eye because its hard to focus on both of the subjects.

Simplicity

This photo really shows simplicity because it is a simple blue background with nothing in the way. It focuses your eye to look at the building and you don't get distracted by anything else.

Rule of Thirds

This picture uses rule of thirds because the towers are not directly in the center, they are shifted more to the right. The rule of thirds helps draw your eye to the towers and it is more pleasing to the eye.

Lines

The lines in this picture is the tower in the background and it really draws your eye to look at the  falling man. Since everything in this picture is lines it makes you want to look at the one thing that isn't a line.

Framing

The framing in this picture is the broken window because it frames the firefighter on the ladder. This picture is really appealing to the eye because it helps you see what the main subject is supposed to be.

Balance

This picture shows balance because there is a pretty equal amount of rubble on both sides. This really helps balance the photo because everything looks equal in the picture.

National Geographic

1. This was my favorite photo because it is such an amazing picture and it really captures the beauty of nature. The photographer did such a great job at capturing the lake and the snowy mountains in the background. The color contrast of the white and dark blue make it such an interesting picture to look at. There is so much going on that I could look at this picture for hours and not get bored.

2. If I were going to submit a photo for this contest I would definitely to a nature photo because nature can be so beautiful and there is so many different sides of it that you can capture. Im not sure exactly what I would post but it would have something to do with nature and it would probably be a landscape.

Touching People

1. I think this project and photo essay is very interesting and unique. It is really cool to see how the strangers reacted with each other and how they touched each other.

2. If someone came up and approached me with a camera and ask me to do the same thing as this project I would do it because it is such a unique experience and it would be a really fun story to tell.

3. A fun photo shoot that is similar to this one would be going out and asking strangers to embrace and see their reactions.

4. I enjoyed looking at these photos because I found it cool to examine the people's faces and body language with each other. The pictures were somewhat boring after a while because they were all taken in the same way but I liked them.

1. I chose this photo because I could really understand what was going on and I could feel the emotion that the little boy was feeling at this moment.

2. My eyes were drawn to this picture because it was a new picture that had really good quality and I liked the angle because you could see the faces of both of the subjects.

3. This photo was chosen to be one of the Top 40 Most Powerful Photos because it was such a sad moment when the little boy had to be brave for his dad and accept the flag. It is a very emotional picture  and the photographer really captured the emotion.

1. I chose this photo because the photographer captured the reaction at the perfect time and it is a very powerful photo.

2. My eyes were drawn to this photo because it is in black and white and the little boy face is so close up that you really want to look at it.

3. I think this picture was chosen for the Top 40 Most Powerful Photographs because it is so powerful to see how shocked and happy the little boy is to hear for the first time.

1. I picked this photo because it really shows a lot of emotion and it captures the moment very well.

2. My eyes were drawn to this photo because I like how the photographer didn't use the rule of thirds and just had the subject be in the very center. It helps the mom and daughter be the center of attention.

3. I think this photo made the Top 40 Most Powerful Photos because it is very emotional to see people that were fighting in the war get reunited with their families. It is such a happy moment and the photographer captured it really well.

Warm Up

What did you think about the unique idea?
1. I think the idea of these photos is very unique and interesting. I think that it is really cool but also kind of scary.

When you first looked at the photos, did it take you a second to figure out what you were looking at?
2. It only took one picture for me to understand what it was actually a photo of but I figured it out pretty quickly.

Sometime maybe you can try something unique like this...
3. I think it would be really cool to try something unique like this because it seems really interesting. It might be hard for me to come up with an idea though because I am not very creative.

Great Black and White Photographers PART 2

Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann was born on June 11, 1934 in Detroit, MI. At the age of 14 he had sparked an interest in photography because he believed it was a good way to express himself and "live through the camera." When he was a young adult he landed a few jobs, usually photographing models. As he grew older he went to the Rochester Institute of Technology and Indiana University. He went on to teach photography at the University Of Florida. Jerry published 5 books and his most recent was titled Approaching the Shadows.  His photography can be found in the opening scenes of several television shows. His photography style requires extensive time in a dark room because they are edited and they aren't normal pictures.

The Camera

The Camera

1.The "camera obscure" effect is acheived when a tiny hole is created in one wall inside of a completely dark room. Light is focused through the hole and the outside scene is projected upside down on the opposite wall.

2. In the 17th century the understanding of optics and the process of making high quality lenses was perfected. This invention helped us to get one step closer to the modern camera.

3. The 3 parts of the first modern camera invented by Niepce are film, a dark box, and a glass lens.

4. The modern camera is still very much the same as Neipce's camera because they boy use the same process of taking a photograph and modern camera's still have the same main parts.

5. To capture an image, digital camera's use a electric sensor called a CCD which replaces old-fashioned plastic film.

Camera Modes

6. Auto mode completely controls flash and exposure while program mode is just an automatic assist even though you can sometimes control the flash and exposure.

7. Portrait mode tries to use the fastest available lens setting to blur out the background and get a better picture of the main object.

8. Sports mode is used to freeze the action by using the fastest possible shudder speed so that the camera gets the exact picture you want.

The Half-Press

9. You should use the half press on the trigger button because it will help keep the picture in focus and it has a faster full-press response.

Controlling Flash

10. The symbol means that you have disabled the flash and you would want to do that when there is more natural light because it will make it more dramatic.

Best Photo

Best Photo

This is one of the best photos I took because I like the way the camera only focused on the flower and butterfly. I also like how the butterflies wings are open so you can see its color and pattern. I think this is a good picture because it looks very professional.

Worst Photo

I didn't like this photo because it wasn't anything special. I could have made it more exciting by maybe using a different angle instead of just straight on. The photo also could have been focused on just one thing to make it look better. I just didn't like this photo  very much and it is my least favorite photo that I took.
