Self Portraits and Portraits Part 1

  • Experiment with Lighting
  • Break the Rules of Composition
  • Experiment with Subject Expressions
I liked this environmental portrait because you can see the old man's story about how his family is gone because he is sitting alone with all of the pictures. I like how the put the man in the center so you can see everything else.
I liked this environmental portrait because they only captured the lower portion of the subject. I also liked how they introduced a prop to the picture and used a simple background. The picture just looks really good because of all the things they put together.
I really liked this self portrait because he added his touch to show that he was a photographer by placing an image inside of his hands. I also like how it is in black and white and the background is white because it makes the picture look so simple.
I liked this self portrait because I think it's really cool how he used the smoke effect to make it look like he is disappearing. I also like that it is black and white because it helps to make the portrait look even more dramatic.
I liked this casual portrait because I think the angle they got at makes the picture look really good. I like how you can see the little girl through the grass because it makes it more interesting than just a normal portrait. I also like how she isn't looking at the camera.
I like this casual portrait because the subject isn't looking down the lens, but they are looking at a different angle and it adds emotion. I also like the how the put him on a line of thirds so you could see the pattern of the fence in the background.

For my portrait shoot I will probably take pictures of my older sister because she has really bright blue eyes. I will most likely do a close up on one of her eyes with a blue background to bring put her eyes. I might also have her put on her glasses to frame her eyes and maybe put her right in the center go the picture. I will also take pictures of my friend Adriana while she is jumping on the trampoline. I will most likely be in worm's eye view so it can be a really cool jumping picture. I would also like if I could get a picture of her completely in the air on a line of thirds.

ISO

 Photo taken at ISO 6400
Photo taken at ISO 200

1. The advantages of using a higher ISO during a sporting event is because you can freeze motion better and can get a good action shot.
2. The author suggested lowing a lower ISO whenever you can because the photo won't have as much noise and the quality will turn out better.
3. The author suggested using a high ISO when there isn't enough light for the camera to quickly capture an image or when you are focusing more on freezing the action.

Aperture:
The highest aperture setting is 2.8 and the lowest is 22.

Shutter Speed:
The fastest shutter speed is 1/4000 of a second and the slowest is 1 second.

ISO:
The lowest ISO is 100 and the highest is 256000.

2. Auto mode- Shutter speed and aperture are decided for you by the camera
Shutter Priority- Aperture is decide by the camera but you manually set she shutter speed each time
Manual- You manually set shutter speed and aperture each time you shoot

Aperture

 Photo Taken at f2.8
Photo Taken at f32

1. We should relate aperture to our pupil because they work very similarly.
2. The smaller the aperture the larger the f-stop, the larger the aperture the smaller the f-stop.
3. Aperture definitely affects depth of field because when the aperture is smaller it means that the depth of field is very large so almost everything is in focus. When the aperture is larger, the depth of field gets smaller and focuses only on the foreground objects.

Love and Loss

1. At first I felt really happy for the couple because they looked like they loved each other very much and they both looked happy. As I kept scrolling down I started to get more and more sad when I saw the wife slowly dying and how sad her expressions were.

2. Now that I have looked at these photos I can really understand this comment. I think it makes a lot of sense because the photos are actual events that happened in their life and that is their story. They don't define him because that is him and that is his life.

3. I personally don't think I could shoot photos like this if I was in this situation because it would just make me really sad to capture the emotion and look at those sad pictures all of the time. On the other hand I feel like I would want to capture the happy moments to remember when they were gone.

4. If I could write Angelo a letter I would tell him that he did a great job capturing all of those moments to completely tell a story. I would also apologize for his loss because that must have been a really hard thing for him to go through because he lost his wife and best friend.

Abandoned Theme Park

Abandoned Theme Parks
1. I would like to visit the Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara, Japan because it really caught my eye. I really liked how unique the cars on the ferris wheel were and how rusted they were. I think it would be really fun to go out and take pictures there because you could get up pretty high and take pictures of the whole park. I also liked the big roller coaster and how the cars were just stuck up at the top of it. I also like how the weather is foggy because it makes for a really spooky picture.

2.

3. Places I thing would be interesting for photographers:
-Graveyards
-sunken ships
-old churches
-hot air balloon festival
-sunsets on a mountain

4.

5. I think it would be really fun to take pictures of a sunken ship because it is really creepy and unusual. It interests me because you can explore through the ship and get so many different kinds of pictures that most people would never see. Since it is underwater you always have the chance to get a picture of fish swimming through the ship. I just think it would be fun to take pictures here because you could swim around an explore.

6. It would be very challenging for me to take pictures at a sunken ship because I would need to get a scuba diving license which would be pretty hard. I would also have to research places where sunken ships are and travel to them. I would need to get a very expensive camera that can take pictures underwater so it would be pretty hard for me to get some pictures.

Africa

Africa

1. I really like his work because he just captures the natural beauty of animals while they aren't doing anything exciting. I like how he tries to get as much of the background and landscape as he can in the picture. His pictures really stand out to me because they are so natural and calm and very pleasing to the eye. I think its awesome how honest he is when he says he doesn't have a connection with the animals he is just obsessed with their beauty.
I really liked this picture because the photographer captured a really nice balance between both zebras and the background helps the main subjects really stand out. This photograph is balanced because both zebras are right next to each other, looking in the same diraction, and they split the picture right down the center.

5. Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 6711 while he takes pictures of the animals. That is important because he doesn't use zoom lenses or telephoto because he likes the actual beauty of the animals and actually being close to them.

6.Brandt takes these photo because he wants to capture the wild animals and places before they are destroyed or changed in some way.

7. His hope is to show people the natural state of being that the animals are in and to to show the world their natural beauty before they are gone.

8. "To me, every creature, human or nonhuman, has an equal right to live, and this feeling, this belief that every animal and I are equal, affects me every time I frame an animal in my camera." -Nick Brandt

Captions

John, Peter, Ella and Lee sit posing on a bench outside their home.
They imitated the 3 Wise monkeys, and John, Peter and Lee seemed to
be more photo-ready than Ella.
(See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, take no crap)
Martha and Stacy laugh and joke around as they take pictures at their friends 70th birthday party. They have known each other for years and love to party.

Grace doesn't actually hate everyone, her granddaughter, Priscilla made her wear this shirt. Grace and Priscilla have a very good relationship, in fact, Priscilla is Grace's favorite grandchild.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

1. Jerry Uelsmann's photos definitely caught my eye as soon as I looked at them because almost all of them are 2 pictures morphed together and they are very edited. I think his photos are really interesting and unique because the way he edits them is very different.
2. I can see the the dark black lake draping the photo. I see the wrinkles and lines covering the hands. I see the trees and mountains in the horizon. (picture 2)
I smell the crisp, stale air. I smell the earth dirt and roots hanging from the tree. I smell the murky, smelly, brown water. (picture 1)
I hear the rushing water falling off the cliff. I hear the screams of people falling into the endless void. I hear the hollow boat slowly falling to the water. (picture 3)
I taste the cold air and snowflakes covering the mountains. I taste the dirty, murky water in my mouth. I taste the earthy and natural feel in the picture. (picture 1)
I feel fear as I stare into the dark black water. I feel the cold water resting in the palm of my hands. I feel the storm clouds slowly moving in to the scene. (picture 2)
3. I would like to create a blog or powerpoint to share Jerry Uelsmann with the world because it would be kind of hard to see his pictures on a poster since they are so dark.

Photo Mural Project

1. A theme we could do here at Bowie is maybe a panel for each of the dress up days we have had like pink out, black out, and America day.

2. I think we should use phones and cameras just depending on what the photographer wants to use.

3. I would just put the murals like in the hallways or by the library so people could see it.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. Some of the challenges I faced during this shoot were that I found it hard to walk into the classrooms and ask the teachers if I could take pictures because I was embarrassed.

2. I found myself thinking a lot about what I wanted the camera to focus on in the picture. I think I did a good job of doing this in my Lines photo because it partly focused on the left line which is what I wanted.

3. If I did this shoot again I would think more about all of the rules that I wanted to incorporate in this picture and focus more on that.

4. The things I would do the same were go to the library and get pictures of students because it was a really good place to see everyone working.

5. I think the easiest rule to achieve without noticing is Rule of Thirds because it is kind of the natural thing to do.

6. I think the hardest rule to capture is framing or simplicity because they are hard to naturally capture in a lot of situations.

7. I honestly understand all of the composition rules because I have learned them before.

http://emmaphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2014/10/balance.html#comment-form

I think her photos are all really good because they follow the rules really well and they are very creative. One thing I think she could change is to make sure her pictures have a little more to do with academics.

Academic Shoot

Balance
1. I think I followed the rule well because you can easily see that the binder splits the middle and there is one boy on each side.
2. The subject in this photo is the boys studying or looking at their binder in the middle of the picture.
3. I think it is clear to see what the subject is because there is no other people in the background and it is focused on the subject.
4. I followed the rule pretty well and I don't think there is anything I could have done differently.

Framing
1. I followed the rule in this picture because the students in the classroom are being framed on 3 of the 4 sides of the photo.
2. The subject in this photo is pretty broad because it us focused on all of the students that are working in the room.
3. It is somewhat hard to find the subject in the picture because there isn't one specific subject that you are supposed to look at.
4. I could have followed the rule better by maybe getting the students to be framed on all 4 sides instead of just 3.

Lines
1. I followed the rule in this photo because you can easily see the lines going across both sides of the picture.
2. There isn't really a subject in this photo because it is mostly just focused on the lines on the picture.
3. It is pretty hard to find a subject in this picture unless you consider the students in their desks a subject.
4. I could have followed the rule a little better by making sure that there is one thing that the lines are leading to.

Rule of Thirds
1. I followed the rule for this picture because the two boys are right in the perfect spot to please the human eye.
2. The subject in this photo is the 2 boys looking at their computer and working.
3. It is pretty easy to find the subject in this photo because it is focused only on the boys and they are right in the rule of thirds
4. I could have followed the rule better by maybe shifting the camera over to the left just a little bit.

Simplicity
1. I followed the rule in this picture because it is only focused on the boy and his work and their is nothing in the background.
2. The subject in this photo is obviously the boy working and it is pretty clear.
3. The subject is really easy to see in this picture because it is the only thing going on.
4. I could have followed the rule by maybe getting the backpack on the table out of the picture because it is a little distracting.
