Student Of The Month Story

This month of April, 2015, has been a great one for Bowie High School in Austin, Texas thanks to the thrilling Student of the Month Award; congratulations to freshman Violet Glenwinkle!

This award is an honor because it provides reasoning for students to try their best in school and reach to accomplish something. In Violet's case, her ambition was rewarded.

"I was ecstatic and relieved because all the hard work finally paid off," Violet said.

Violet Glenwinkle utilizes her success inside and outside of school in the most positive ways possible.

"I can encourage others to pursue my accomplishments which could be a positive influence" Violet exclaims.

It's not easy to become the Student of the Month at Bowie High School, lots of hard work and extra curriculum activities are a necessity to receiving this award.

Violet "kept up her grades and joined multiple activities" to be noticed and considered for the award.

An ideal Student of the Month at Bowie High School portrays not only academic achievement and outstanding athletic abilities, but lota in extra curriculum.

Violet Glenwinkle plays softball and basketball and agrees that "it shows her athletic diversity."

However, this was not the first time Violet has been awarded with something like this.

"This is the second time in a row I've gotten this achievement" Violet claims.

This award does not just come as easily it may seem, even for someone as involved, kind and smart like Violet Glenwinkle.

"I've been wanting it all year" says Violet, which explains why she put so much hard work into it.

Violet Glenwinkle isn't just academically talented and athletic, this award goes to people who demonstrate kindness and contributions to the school environment as well.

"I've tried to be kind and helpful" exclaims Violet, which clearly paid off.

This award isn't the result of one sole person's hard work, though.

Violet Glenwinkle's "family, friends, and teachers" all take great part in her achievement by showing constant support and love.

The Big Day

In this video there was a bride in her dressing room getting ready for her wedding. The video switches to a man driving fast in his car and getting frustrated because he isn't going to make it to the wedding on time. The bride keeps looking out the window waiting for him to show up and he keeps getting more frustrated. The man walks in to the church in the middle of the wedding and the two lovers meet eyes.

Who- Macy Atkinson (bride) and Kevin Johns (Ex lover)
What- waiting for her true love to show up at her wedding
When- Right before the wedding ceremony
Where- At a church in a small town
Why- She knows she is about to marry the wrong guy
How- Macy never stopped loving her old fiancé Kevin

Kevin Johns is speeding down a long winding country road in the rain. Macy Atkinson is in her dressing room with her father and bridesmaids as she is getting ready for her wedding. Macy has a look of terror on her face because she knows she is about to marry the wrong man. Kevin is still speeding down roads and getting frustrated because he is looking at his watch and realizes he won't make it to the wedding on time. Macy looks out the window in her dressing room hoping to see Kevin pull up in his car any minute to stop the wedding. Kevin makes it to the church and walks in to see that he just interrupted in the middle of the ceremony. Macy turns to look at Kevin and then looks down because she is embarrassed that everyone knows she would rather marry him. Macy then looks back up at Kevin and knows that he did the right thing by coming and stopping the wedding.

Final Exam Preview Assignment

1. In these two websites I learned a lot about how to use iMovie. In both the video and the article I learned exactly how to create a movie step by step. I find these websites very useful because before this I had absolutely no idea how to use iMovie.

The first step is to import video files from your computer into iMovie. Then from there its kind of all up to your creativity! You can put the videos in whatever order you want and you can crop them, add sound effects/music, and even add your own voice to the background.

2. One thing I already knew about iMovie was that you could pick a theme at the beginning and it would carry out through the whole movie.

3. Something new that I learned today is that you can split a clip in your movie and have it play at two different times.

4. One thing I am concerned about for this final project is trying to pick a story to tell. I am concerned that I won't pick a good topic and then I won't have enough pictures/time needed for this project.

5. I am confident that once I pick a topic I can get enough pictures early so I will have time to use them for my project.

Portfolio Analysis- how judges pick winning portfolios and sport photos

Part one-
1.

a. Josh Birnbaum
b. Wheelchair Basketball
c. They thought some of his photos were just boring, they thought a lot of his pictures were too cliche and they also didn't like how he did 2 stories about wheelchairs.
d. They liked the humor in some of his pictures. They also liked how he used black and white for all of the second story.
e.  I really don't care for this photographer that much because I agree with the judges. I think his photos were really boring and super cliche.

a. Jordan Murph
b. Sports
c. They really didn't like either of the photo stories that the photographer put in the portfolio, his pictures didn't have anything to do with the story, and some of his pictures were too staged.
d. They really liked the composition of his first couple of photos, His real sports pictures captured really good moments.
e. I didn't like this photographer very much because all of his photo story pictures were just really bad and boring. They weren't exciting or pretty to look at.

a. Carlos Delgado
b. People
c. They did not like either of the photo stories, they thought the colors were really bad the whole time, and the captions did not help explain the photo.
d. They liked some of the angles that the photographer used and the humor in the soccer picture.
e. I really don't like this photographer at all because all of the stories and pictures were just really boring. I honestly didn't like any of his pictures.

2.

a. the judges liked how close he got to the subjects and they also liked how well he captured the moments and facial expressions on people's faces.
b. I think the photographer had a lot of strengths like knowing when to center pictures and when to use the rule of thirds. I also think he did a really good job on framing photos. I don't see any weaknesses

3.

a. The judges just kind of eliminated the photographers as they went because they all agreed that some of them were just really bad. When they got to the last portfolio they all really liked and didn't think there was any bad photos so it was a unanimous vote.

Part two

1. I agree with the judges on a photo in the no ball section where the little girl is punching on some punching bags. The judges don't think it is a good photo and I don't either because it is blurry and the color just isn't as good as it could be. It is also just a boring photo in general.

2. I disagree with the judges on one of the student image photos. It is the one at a baseball game where the dad is tossing his daughter into the air and I think it is an amazing photo because the dad and daughter are a silhouette against the very colorful night sky. The judges just didn't think it was a good photo at all.

Architecture Shoot Preview 2

Angles
I think this photo is a good example of angles because it is not the usual angle that the building is usually photographed from. The photographer shot the building from a worm's eye view to make the building look almost a different shape.

Details
I think this photo is a good example of details because it is a close up picture of the building instead of far away. You can really see the details of the side of the building and it makes you see it differently.

Light
I think this is a good example of light because the sun reflects really well off of the building. You can see the light from the sun reflecting off of the whole building and it looks really cool.

Patterns
I think this photo is a good example of patterns because the interior of the building looks almost the exact same on every floor. Their is a very obvious pattern that is being presented in this photo.

Surroundings
I think this photo is a good example of surroundings because you can see exactly what surrounds the building. It is surrounded by by the ocean and it is very obvious to see that.

Warm Up-Iphone photos

1. My favorite picture is the one of the ice circles in the very very blue water. There is also a mountain in the reflection of the water.

2. It definitely does not seem like all of these images could have been taken with a phone. They look really good and professionally taken.

3. I think the apps that the photographers used could have changed the picture a lot because I know that with Instagram you can make a picture look a lot different by editing it.

4. Two tips I think could help me with photography on my phone is just to make sure I have good lighting, and to make sure the camera focuses on the subject I want it too.

Action Preview Assignment

Why is this part of a winning sports photography portfolio?
It really captured the moment of the water being poured on the coach after they won the game.

What is the shutter speed?
I would assume the shutter speed is very high because it captured the water moving.

Is this a key moment?Could it have been planned?
I think this is a key moment because players always do this after they win a game. I believe it was planned because the players probably told the photographer to get the picture.

What advanced techniques are present in this photo?
The rule of thirds is being used because the coach which is the subject is placed on a line of thirds.

Sensory Overload

1. I really like this statement because I agree whole heartedly. This message kind of goes along with the quote "Home is where the heart is." It doesn't matter where you are, it matters who you're with and whats around it. I feel like as a photographer I should try to capture more of what is in an environment rather than where it is.

10 Photography Resolutions for the New Year
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/31/10-photography-resolutions-new-year/

On this website, the main ideas are based on the blogger's New Year's Resolutions and how to become a better photographer. Some of the Resolutions are how to start keep up with all the images taken and how to be more open about showing one's images. It also includes goals the photographer hopes to do this coming year.

On this website I learned that it is wiser to ask for help from professionals instead of being intimidated by them, because they have had more experience and can advise you for the better.

I choose this photo because it fits the time of year and its cool how snow is captured in this photo along with the girl.

In this photo I see simplicity and balance.

This photo was taken by Jenna Martin.

Style
http://petapixel.com/2014/08/25/approaching-problem-style/

On this website there are ways a photographer can get the basics and intermediate of style in a photo. It also explains the break down of how to understand the concept of stylish photos. The elements of style are line, shape, form, color, and pattern.

I learned that when thinking of your photos, you should mostly be thinking of how you want people to react to your photos and what words would describe them.

I choose this photo because I enjoy the seriousness and dark look it gives off.

In this photo I see simplicity and a lot of pattern.

Photos Everyone Should Know How to Make

http://petapixel.com/2014/12/01/6-types-photos-know-make/

On this magazine I looked at 6 types of ways to take cool photos that can improve one's way of taking photos. There are tons of tricks and tips to how one should take certain types of pictures and how to avoid costly expenses.

I learned the correct way to create an optical illusion by knowing how to distance the foreground and the background. I also learned the difficulties of combing two pictures to create a double exposure portrait photo.

I choose this photo because I like the way the photographer/ editor crafted the photo to merge together the way it did and still have the same form of a girl.

In this photo I see rules of simplicity and possibly some pattern.

The photo was taken by Brian Tomlinson.

The Oldest Living Thing In The World

http://www.rachelsussman.com/portfolio/#/oltw/

This website is about how a photographer traveled the world to photograph organism 2,000 years and older. By partnering with biologist to document some of the oldest elements still alive on this Earth.

I learned that millennia- old organisms have never been created in the arts or sciences. I also learned that capturing and traveling the world on a mission takes years to complete.

I choose this photo because of the thickness and green the tree contains. I also like the development and strength the tree has.

I see simplicity and balance in this photo.

Great Portraits

http://blog.phowd.com/2014/09/7-tips-shooting-great-portrait-photographs/

This website is about how to take better portrait with use 7 straight forward tips with models. The tips are based on photo shoots using a model where the position and where there eyes on matter depending on the message the photographer is trying to send.

I learned how professionals can change a models facial features and skin tone through editorial marks on the computer.

I can use this in my photojournalism class by knowing how to position my subjects when going for a portrait.

The website doesn't really talk about the specific program it is using when doing before and afters but it does go into detail about how a portrait can be better by having them not look directly into the camera.

Welcome Back

This is one of my favorite pictures of 2014 because I just think it is really cool how the photographer caught the firework in perfect contrast with the night sky. I also like how you can see the moon in the background.

This is one of the top pictures of 4014 because there is so many famous people in one selfie so it makes it even more awesome.

I like this picture because the photographer did a really good job at capturing the moment of all of these people crammed onto a tiny boat. You can really feel the emotion that was going on.

  1. I think the best song of 2014 was Jay-Z and Beyonce's "Drunk In Love" because it is still very popular and I listen to it all the time. It is a very catchy song and I can sing along to all of it, plus almost everybody knows the song.
  2. I think the best movie of 2014 was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire because I saw it about 5 times and I loved it so I'm sure other people saw it a bunch of times. I thought it was a very well thought out movie.
  3. I think Ebola was definitely the top news story of the year because I talked about it with my friends all the time. Everyone was scared that they would get it so every body always talked about it.
  4. I think Beyonce was the most important person in 2014 because a lot of teenagers talked about her a lot. A lot of teens started calling her Queen and Mom because they love her so much.
  5. I feel like Cristiano Ronaldo was the most important sports person of 2014 because all of the girls obsessed over him whenever he played in the FIFA world cup.

1. Something fun that happened to me this holiday is getting to see my cousins. They flew all the way down here from Florida and I hadn't seen them in about 2 years so it was a great surprise.

2. My resolutions for 2015 are to exercise more and just eat healthier so I can loose weight.

3. I am looking forward to Spring Break of 2015 because I am going to Port Aransas with all of my friends and it is going to be very fun.
